Top tips for tackling your job interview
We're excited
for you!
To help you prepare for your conversations with employers,
here are some quick tips to get you in the right mindset.
Before the Interview
Pre-Interview
Preparation is key!
Research, create your notes! | Explore the app you will use. | Make sure your audio and video are working. | Practice meditation or calming techniques. |
Get the basics about the company and role you're applying for. Interviews are a two-way street. Prepare any questions you might have, too. | Most interviews nowadays are conducted online. Familiarize yourself with what you're going to use to lessen technical difficulties. | Test your setup at least a day before your interview. If your app allows it, try to join the meeting link early to check your headset, microphone, and camera. | A few hours before your interview, do something that calms you. Being collected will help you process the conversation better! |
Interview Tip
Rather than prepping for specific interview questions, think about specific highlights from your career that you want to talk about. Think about stories that you want to tell, and find a way to work them into your answers to common behavioral interview questions.
Hint: Common themes include past accomplishments, areas of expertise, challenges, tight deadlines, teamwork, strengths, weaknesses, etc.
Pre-Interview
Prep your examples using the star technique
S Situation | T Task | A Action | R Result |
What was the situation at hand? | What was your role, or what were you “tasked with” in the situation? | What did you do? Spend the most time talking about this. | What happened as a result? |
STAR Example
Q: Tell me about a time you experienced a lot of pressure at work
Answer, using the STAR format:
S Situation | T Task | A Action | R Result |
“On a Wednesday morning, we realized that our website was down, and none of our clients could enter their payroll information online.” | “As the primary contact for my clients, I knew we needed to find a way for them to communicate the hours to us so their payroll could be processed on time.” | “I sent an e-mail to all of our clients with alternative ways to submit their payroll, and then called anyone we hadn’t heard from to get their information over the phone.” | “All of our clients were able to process payroll on time, and several of our clients thanked me for my hard work.” |
